The U.S. Defense Department’s GenAI.mil portal — launched with Google Gemini for staff who need commercial frontier models without dumping sensitive work into consumer chat apps — now also offers ChatGPT and Grok builds for government use. TechCrunch reports GenAI.mil already has more than 1.7 million unique users out of roughly 3 million DoD personnel.
“ChatGPT Mil,” from OpenAI’s government program, targets chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs for unclassified administrative, logistics, planning, and policy work. Starshield/xAI’s Grok for Government is pitched for productivity, knowledge continuity, and secure collaboration. The story is less “AI in weapons” and more “enterprise AI seat count inside the world’s largest bureaucracy” — with three lab brands now on one internal portal.
