Free Discord users just got a bigger pipe. The Verge reports the file-size cap for attachments on free accounts is now 20MB, up from 10MB. That is still far below Nitro tiers, but it is the first meaningful lift in a long time for people who share screenshots, short clips, log files, and homework without paying.
The second change may matter more on phones. Discord says mobile apps will now check the real file size before they compress an attachment, matching what the desktop app already does. Anyone who has watched a crisp photo turn into mush “to make it upload” knows the pain. If the file already fits the cap, the app should stop “helping.” Discord’s own File Attachments FAQ is the support trail for the new numbers.
This is not a storage product launch. It is Discord admitting the free tier had become hostile to basic files while the rest of the internet moved to bigger defaults. Gamers sending VOD snippets, students dropping PDFs, and server mods posting update builds all benefit. Power users will still hit Nitro for 500MB-class clips. For everyone else, 20MB and honest mobile uploads is the kind of small systems fix that actually shows up in daily use.
