Chess.com has opened Gambit, a poker product, and says more classic-game expansions are planned. The Verge interview with Chess.com’s Albert Cheng describes a tiny team leaning on AI tooling to stand up Gambit quickly rather than staffing a full second studio from day one. Strategically it is a horizontal move: Chess.com already owns attention from millions of board-game users and wants more session time inside regulated-friendly social games.
Poker brings different trust, fairness, and compliance burdens than blitz chess ratings, so the long-term test is whether Gambit feels as clean as Chess.com’s core ladder. Short term, it shows consumer game platforms treating large-language and codegen assistants as shipping leverage, not just novelty features inside the product.
