Apple told TechCrunch it sent a new batch of threat notifications on Thursday to people in 110 countries it believes were targeted. To date it has notified customers in more than 150 countries. Apple also emails targets and warns them when they sign in, and it published a support page on what to do next. The Verge notes these attacks have historically been tied to state-linked actors, not random phishing. Apple says it redesigned the flow so the next steps are easier to reach from the alert itself. Devices in scope include iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Do not tap random “fix now” links that arrive beside the official alert. Use Apple’s own support article, update the OS, change passwords from a clean device if you can, and treat iCloud data as possibly exposed until you know otherwise. Journalists, activists, executives, and anyone who travels through high-risk networks should know this screen exists. Everyone else should still take it seriously if it ever appears — Apple does not send it for a suspicious SMS.
