Nvidia is in talks to put as much as $3 billion into SB Energy, the SoftBank Group company building a huge planned data-center campus in Ohio for OpenAI. The Information reported the talks on Saturday, August 15, citing people familiar with the discussions. Reuters carried the report the same day and said it could not immediately verify the details. Nvidia and SB Energy did not comment outside regular hours.
The equity check is only one slice. The Information said the $3 billion sits inside a wider conversation with OpenAI and SB Energy about $100 billion of credit support for that Ohio campus. Half the $3 billion would go in when the project deal is signed. The other half would come with SB Energy’s planned IPO. The same report said SB Energy wants to list as soon as next month and could raise at least $5 billion. The company, founded in 2019 and also backed by OpenAI, builds large power and data-center sites for AI workloads.
Treat this as a reported negotiation, not a signed deal. A separate Wall Street Journal note, also relayed by Reuters, said Nvidia has already scaled back how much credit it would initially guarantee on the Ohio project — now expected below $120 billion, down from about $250 billion discussed earlier. Watch for a joint statement. Until then, the hard news is the $3 billion SB Energy stake under discussion, the 50/50 split between close and IPO, and the $100 billion credit talk around one campus.
