Netflix is closing two game studios. The Verge reports Night School Studio — the Oxenfree team — and Moonloot Games are being shut down as Netflix leans harder into TV-style party games. The kicker, also noted by PC Gamer: this comes about a month after Netflix talked up Night School’s new title as one of its most successful cloud-game debuts. Praise, then padlock.
That pattern is becoming the Netflix games story. The company will fund a hit-shaped experiment, quote “solid numbers,” then decide the broader games org should look more like a living-room party layer on the streaming app. Story-led mid-size studios lose. Lightweight, controller-on-the-couch games stay. Staff at Night School and Moonloot are the ones who pay for a strategy slide.
Players should assume Oxenfree-style originals will not keep coming on the service, and that already-shipped titles can lose live support. If you care about those games, download them while they are still listed. For the industry, it is another warning that a streamer’s games division can vanish faster than a console platform holder’s. Good launch metrics are not a studio shield.
