Third-party Android app stores are on Google Play now — and a judge says hiding them behind secret search phrases is not good enough. 9to5Google notes Aptoide Games already listed this week and installs more cleanly than old-school sideloading. Google still told people they needed a direct link or very specific queries. Judge Donato, in the long-running Play Store case, called that “not acceptable,” and said even a 70-percent-right search like “store for apps” should surface rivals.
That is a discovery fight, not a technical one. Google already proved it can host another store. The court wants users to be able to stumble into one. If Google complies, Play search becomes a directory of stores, not only a directory of apps. If it slow-walks, expect another order. For users, the near-term win is fewer mystery APKs from random sites. For developers, it is a second shelf that people can actually find.
Security is the open question. A store that is easy to find is also easy to phishing-clone. Google will likely wrap this in more warnings. The direction of travel is still clear: Android’s “open” story is being rewritten in court filings, one search ranking at a time.
