Gemini’s meeting notes are leaving the video call. The Verge reports Google Meet is rolling out a “take notes” button for paid Workspace accounts that records from your laptop or phone mic so Gemini can write notes for an in-person meeting. Same job as the virtual feature: a transcript, action items, and a Google Doc dropped into Drive. Google’s Workspace Updates blog lists it as available now for that in-person “Take notes for me” flow.
This is a small button with a large workplace effect. Hybrid teams already live in Meet for remote people and in a glass room for everyone else. Until now the AI notetaker only “heard” the call. If the important argument happened after someone closed the laptop lid, the doc was empty. Pointing Meet at the table mic closes that hole — and creates an obvious consent problem. Recording a physical room is not the same as joining a Meet where the recap bot is visible in the participant list.
Admins should treat this as a policy feature, not just a productivity toy. Who can tap the button, how long audio is kept, and whether guests are warned will decide whether this is helpful or a lawsuit. For teams that already trust Meet recaps, it is the missing half of the product. For everyone else, it is another reason to ask “is this meeting being transcribed?” before you speak.
